Nature Photography and Interpretation…

For those of you who may be anxious about the mixing of silver halide and pixels, be assured that beautiful light, with all its subtlety and variation, cannot be created in the computer. There is no substitute for being out there. And the love of being out there is the first prerequisite for successful Landscape Photography. The influence of the romantic School of Landscape Painting ( painters, incidentally, who got out and experienced the elements) on contemporary Landscape Photography is probably more profound that most of us realize.

The popular photographic topics of sunsets, wild seas and brooding skies all appear in the works of Turner and caspar David Friedrich. Later, portraying the ephemeral aspects of the landscape concerned Cézanne as much as it does today’s photographers chasing the light. A study of Western Landscape Painting, even before the XVII° Century, reveals a growing preoccupation with authenticity, with representing Nature accurately.

A Stroll in Giverny…

PHJ_4157-LR_DPW

I have been hiking these last days in Normandy since I have a country house  in the surroundings. As most of you know, Impressionism has its nest in this wonderful area and, especially in Giverny. This little village is famous because of Claude Monet House and Gardens. I felt I had to make a very modest tribute to his memory. This landscape explains the reason why Impressionism birth found its place there !  The hue palette are exactly these…

Sure, I played around adding some texture in the sky to do it the Monet’s way, but I promise there is no cheating in the tonalities : these are true colors. I admit, This photograph of Nature may be more impressionistic than documentary but it gives an accurate sense of atmospheric and weather conditions, and an overall feeling of the scene. My main purpose is to convey a a mood or a feeling that Nature has evoked, to me, and… I’m sure, to these painters. I like to single out what makes these instant so magic, to express some kind of connection between a natural design, a light and a my perception of things rather than to provide specific, factual information. By emphasizing a mood feeling, I incorporate my interpretation in the resulting image.

The elements composing your image, the ones you choose to put in place in your photograph as building blocks, the arrangement of them, their placement , one to the others, are made visible by Light. Light is the raw material of your images. Your mastery will be to express your perception of what makes your environment, at the precise moment of the shoot, through the triggering of the shutter and the aperture of your lens !
